Harry Potter Book 7 (–update: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows)

The Harry Potter books by JK Rowling are among the best I’ve read in a long time. Now that may seem like gushy fan praise, but hold that thought. For the past seven years I’ve read very little but children’s stories and board books. You guessed it; I’ve been reading these books to my now seven-year-old daughter. Before children, or BC as I like to say I was a ravenous reader. After my daughter was born, or AD as I like to say, soon followed by my son, my reading was greatly curtailed.

The Harry Potter books have been a wonderful point of connection for my daughter and me. But along with that they are also well-written, well-crafted stories. This has helped fill my reading jones, though now my foot is tapping for book seven.

To that end, since this post is about book seven it obviously isn’t a critique of the ending. No, this is my first predictive post and it is a tall order. The Harry Potter books are far from predictable, so I thought I would first lay out a list of directions I think she’s going in with percentages representing how strongly I feel about them. Then I’ll give you my ending.

Their ending

  1. Dumbledore is not dead 90% (–update: in Aug. 06 JK Rowling says No)
  2. Fawkes is the root of Dumbledore’s resurrection 85% (-update: see #1)
  3. Snape is not a bad guy 95%
  4. Hogworts will be opened 100%
  5. Harry will go back to Hogworts 98%
  6. Lupin and Tonks Hookup, but Lupin Dies 70%
  7. Tonks Kick’s deatheater butt revenging Lupin 60%
  8. Harry and Ginny hookup 90%
  9. Harry is a Hoarcrux of some sort 80%
  10. Percy Weasely is the next Defense Against Dark Arts Teacher 40%
  11. Lucious Malfoy gets out of Azkaban to cause trouble 87%
  12. Neville kicks some deatheater butt 60%
  13. Neville dies 90%
  14. The book will be over 500 pages 95%

My Better Ending

Here’s how it goes. Now that Snape is on the run with the deatheaters and Dumbledore is dead, the Ministry takes more control in the running of Hogworts. After much hand wringing it is opened for the following year with McGonagall as the headmistress. In an awkward twist Percy becomes the new defense against dark arts teacher.

The order of the Phoenix goes through upheaval in the wake of Snape’s seemingly treacherous murder of Dumbledore, but Lupin ends up in charge. They help Harry pursue three more hoarcruxs but find more already taken by R.A.B., and the last they can’t track down finding it not to be in Voldemorts snake.

Lucius Malfoy breaks Azkaban with the help of the death eaters and in a pitched battle involving the Order of the Phoenix Lupin is killed. Tonks goes all vigilante and completely rogue taking out Fenrir Greyback in the process. Neville, is put into a position to face Voldemort and dies. This fulfills the prophecy without the death of Harry or Voldemort leaving everyone uncetain that Harry is the “chosen one”. Bill Weasely rises as a key member in the order of the Phoenix as they try to rain in Tonks and pursue the last hoarcruxs.

Near the end Dumbledore reveals himself to Harry, explaining that Snape helped fake his death to cover his tracks so he could pursue the hoarcurxes. Don’t act so surprised, this was heavily foreshadowed by Dumbledore’s offer to do the same for malfoy. Rowling never drops a detail like that without using it later, and book 7 is all the later there is. Also, it is way too convinient that a member of the Order (yes Snape) did the deed. Also, because of all of the attention drawn to Fawkes’ mourning for Dumbledore, I suspect that the phoenix’s healing powers play into his resuerection. Of course Harry must keep Dumbledore’s resurection a secret.

Dumbledore also reveals that Harry himself contains the final Hoarcrux created after Voldemort killed his parents. The verification of this is the reason for Dumbledore’s visit. Voldemort tried to create a human Hoarcurx in Harry tying their fates together inexorably to confound the prophecy. This process, however, was more perilous than he expected, and breaking his soul into the final shred nearly killed him.

Snape once again appears to have been on the good side all along. The guilt Snape carries, as alluded to by Dumbledore, turns out not be for his role in the death of James Potter, but for Lilly whom he loved from afar, awkwardly no doubt. Also, as revealed in the Half Blood Prince Snape is a “mudblood”, so he could never really trust his position with Voldemort or among the deatheaters.

Hermione and Ron, whom Harry has confided in about the hoarcrux, meanwhile have figured out a magic wedgie to help separate Harry’s soul from that of Voldemorts. A climatic battle ensues between The Order of the Phoenix and Voldemort and the deatheaters, with Dumbledore showing up unexpectedly. At the last possible minute the magic wedgie works allowing Snape, in a final act of duplicity, to kill Voldemort and redeem himself finally in the eyes of the order.

You’re a genius. If Rowling doesn’t write it like this, she’ll be sorry. Actually, probably not…it would be a little lame if there were no surprises. But it’s still brilliant.

  2. steve on August 2nd, 2006 11:59 am

Zoe, thanks for your kind words. I had a lot of fun writing this one. To be honest I expected to be blasted for it. JK Rowling is a fun one to try to predict because small details in one book often come back as important plot notions in another. For instance Polyjuice potion was a minor plot twist in the chamber of secrets; brewed by Hermione to spy on Malfoy. But it came back as a major underpinning of the story when Mad eye Moody was being impersonated in the Goblet of fire. Despite the hints she sprinkles about she has a knack for plot twists. So even if I scored well I expect there will still be plenty of surprises!

I heard, If everything goes as planned, the 6th Harry Potter movie is set to be released in November 21st 2008-Thanksgiving weekend. Until then, part 5 will make its way to the cinemas in July 2007.
Summer debut for “Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix” is without a doubt one of the most expected movies of the moment, even if the filming just started and will last another year.
The 7th and final book is expected hit the jackpot even harder since J.K Rowling suggested that some of the main characters might die, including Harry Potter. I just can’t wait it!

Thanks for posting. I agree the Harry Potter stories have become enormous phenomena. Each book and movie seems to be an unquestioned success and revenue earner. This is part of why I would only give about a 2% chance that Rowling would kill off Harry. While certainly just about everyone else is fair game, the death of Harry would really end the franchise. And while J.K. Rowling may have that kind of courage, and perhaps determination to move onto other projects, I think it would be a very tough sell to everyone else hoping to ride the Tsunami magnitude of the Harry Potter franchise. No doubt there will be many surprises and unexpected twists in book 7, but my money is on Harry walking away at the end on his own two feet.

interestingly close to what I’ve been thinking too… Snape’s being ‘bad’ would be way too predictable, Dumbledore was begging Snape TO ‘kill’ him, Dumbledore’s patronus is a phoenix and Fawked left Hogwarts ‘never to be seen again’ when Dumbledore ‘died’, Harry’s being a Horcrux was in it right from the point at which Dumbledore pointed out that you ‘could’ make a person a Horcrux but it would be risky (hence why Voldemort has never actually killed Harry - would be like killing a piece of himself, it will very probably be over 500 pages…

Things I’m interested in your thoughts on are: opening Hogwarts? Not that I don’t think it’s a reasonable plot twist, but the kids have a whole lot of Horcruxes to be found (unless hte book starts with ‘over the summer they looked for 5 but found that RAB had taken them already’, plotwise, it just woudln’t work to have the book be a whole series of the Harry/Dumbledore cave adventure part of HBP. Also, conceivably, Harry and everyone else is way too upset to just go back to lessons every day for a year. So at your 100% prediction of Hogwarts being opened and hte kids going back to school, how do you think that’ll go down within the confines of one last book?

Second, and you don’t mention it here, who do you think RAB is? Seems too late to introduce another main character, so it kinda has to be someone we know… but it could have been up to 13 years since he/she took it (them).

Third - Harry will live? Seems to me that the series has an overriding theme of father figures - and that if nothing else, now that Harry has become a father figure (mentor, leader) to the rest of his crew, he kinda has to go… I was guessing that the ‘harry is a horcrux’ wouldn’t come up until very near the end, when Harry himself realized it and sacrificed himself for the good of his friends. no?

Love the format, love the predictions, love the fact that people are still thinking about it (even though the 3rd and 4th movies weren’t great, and the HBP was disappointing for me - but only because the first 5 were sooooo darned good!)

Thanks for posting. I agree with you, that things at Hogwarts will be very strained. However, I suspect that since this has been a major part of the plot structure, I’d be a little surprised if J.K. Rowling did the last book differently. Also, I think that post “Dumbledore’s death” Hogwarts is fertile ground for lots of good character tension not to mention a pretty good metaphor for things going on in the real world. No doubt it will not be a run of the mill year, and not everyone will be returning!

As for RAB, it’s an interesting point. I didn’t advance a theory about who it is because I don’t think it’s really been foreshadowed yet. I think she’s keeping this one very close to the vest. Sort of like trying to guess who Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are without their defining details. I do expect it to be a juicy surprise and a good aha kind of moment though.

As for Harry’s death I’m hoping Rowling doesn’t go in the Martyr direction with him. Mostly because it’s too easy, and I don’t think that’s typically the way she writes from a craft perspective. I do think Neville is in a lot of trouble though!

As for the movies, while they’re fun I try to keep them separate in my mind from the books. There’s just so much that has to be cut out in the interests of making the movie less than 3 hours. I’m more looking forward to the last book much more than the next movie to be sure.
    Steve (MBE)

  10. G on December 12th, 2006 10:34 pm

RAB actually has been foreshadowed. If you go back in book 5 they actually find the horcrux in Grimmauld Place while cleaning it out for the Order. It is a locket that can’t be opened. RAB happens to be Regulus Black, Sirius Black’s younger sibling, who joined the Death Eaters and wound up dead.

  11. steve on December 13th, 2006 9:40 am

Possibly, I’ve certainly seen that theory on other sites. But if that were indeed the “foreshadow” of who RAB is, I would think it more likely to be Sirius. That would be more in keeping with J.K. Rawlings twisting plot style. It could be Sirius possibly avenging his brother’s death, or making up for his family’s part in the evil. But I don’t feel strongly about this one, and I think we don’t have the pieces yet.

  12. Katie on January 29th, 2007 11:24 pm

Okay, as much as I would loove to believe Dumbledore is alive, I simply can’t. Well, unless you think J.K.R. is low enough to lie to her fans. She read a part of the sixth book to a live audience. A little boy asked if Dumbledore was still alive and she said he is definitely dead. I believe her words were that every author has a small chip of ice in their heart and as much as it killed her, he had to go, so that Harry could go it alone. As for Harry being a horcrux, that is certainly something to think about. I don’t, however, believe that it was Sirius who is RAB, and as for Snape being in love with Lily…no. That’s just wrong somehow. I mean it would add another thing to the list of resentment he had against James, however I believe he was too cold to be in love with someone like Lily. For example, when Harry saw into Snape’s past in the pensieve, when he was practicing his occlumency and legilimency, Harry saw his mother defend Snape, and Severus responded with hate.

Thanks for commenting. As far as Dumbledore’s death, if you’ll note my original post was from April 06, Rowling made the statements you refer to on August 06 (see http://www.hpana.com/news.19531.html ). So relax no slander against J.K.R. intended. But thank you for brining that update to this thread. That’s part of the fun of trying to predict something that hasn’t been written yet. We’ll see how I did on the other points as the facts leak out.

  15. steve on February 2nd, 2007 12:43 pm

Ali, thanks for posting. I also wouldn’t go so far as to say Snape is a “good guy”. If you’ll note above you’ll see I said he’s “not a bad guy”. There’s a subtle but important difference. While he’s certainly no Dubmledore, and he’s undoubtedly in the gray area between good and evil. When it comes right down to it, he’s a muddblood and as such will never completely be accepted among the “evil” elite. I also believe that in the end we’ll see that he has been faithfully following his role as an agent for the Order. But that’s just my 2 cents.

hey, Loved everything you wrote.. I think that you are very close to what i was thinking.. But what is R.A.B.?
I really love hatty potter and have already Ordered 7 at Barnes and Nobles.com .. So all i have to do is sit back and wait for it to come to me :) I am think if this is really the last book.. It will be the biggest of them all. I also thought that the last movie was one of the better ones. It seemed closer to the book.. way better than movie 3. Its kinda weird to read all the books than watch the movies because your mind wants to add all the missing parts in.

so i can’t wait for summer time.. Is there any news on the 7th movie??

great hypthisis on what the next book might be about and i would not be surprised if it came out like that its very entertaining..but i do not think dumbledoor will live becouse she is so content on he is definatly dead..and as for harry being the last hoarcruxs its believable but i dont think its true i think its some whare else but not in the snake becouse its two obvious and snape trying to be the good good guy and redeem himself i dont believe eather becouse he shows so much hate like when james saved his life all he wanted to do was save harry so he had no one to owe himself to…snape carrys alot of hate and i think he did infact kill dumbledoor out of jeoulusy fr being a pwoerful wizard and hatred for not given him the defence against the dark arts job but who knows j.k does seem to surprise us all

Thanks for commenting. My original post was written before J.K.Rowling unequivocally stated that Dumbledore was dead. I haven’t changed the post other than to annotate that fact and that the title has been released. Part of the fun is to see on how many points I got it right on, and how many I missed. So Dumbledore is dead, but we’ll see about the Hoarcrux. As far as Snape I don’t so much think he is a good guy. He’s certainly in the gray area. However, I think the point is that Dumbledore’s confidence in him was not misplaced, and that we will find out at least that. Ultimately I think we may learn that he was in his own way a faithful member of the Order of the Phoenix.

  32. kid from google (15 years) on March 29th, 2007 8:53 pm

I wondered if it was possible that there would be a twist, and
    Neville kills voldemort!

    Explanation:
the “prophecy” could apply to either neville or harry. right? And the ministry just assumed it was harry because of the whole harry voldemort conflict thing. But that doesn’t neccesarily make it so. Therefore, Neville could save harry at the last minute by killing voldemort. Harry would be saved the trouble, and neville would show that he has a spine!

it would be an interesting twist

  33. steve on March 30th, 2007 8:43 am

    Kid
Excellent point, it was really Voldemort himself that chose Harry as the child of the prophecy, and he could be wrong! I actually believe that this will be an important point in the Deathly Hallows. This is essentially why I think Neville is going to die. I suspect that his death will fulfill the prophecy leaving Harry as a free agent! Then you know, chaos ensues.

i love these books they r soo cool no matter wat happens it will be awsome _kaila

  35. steve on March 31st, 2007 9:44 pm

    1st RAB is Regulus Black
2nd Neville cannot fulfill the prophecy because Voldemort made the choice already, Dumbledore tells Harry this in book 5. I believe Snape is good and I believe that Harry will have to die in order to destroy the last horcrux, which is of course himself.

  36. Harman on April 1st, 2007 1:54 am

I have read all the books so far but I’ve only seen 2 of the movies. For some reason, I feel the books are more interesting! They make you think something bad will happen to Harry but never does! In the movies, you somehow KNOW that Harry won’t die! Your predictions are great and I hope the book turns out the same with just a few more surprises!

  37. steve on April 1st, 2007 8:30 am

    Steve
Thanks for posting. As far as RAB, maybe yes maybe no. As far as Neville, Voldemort made the choice, but he may have chosen wrong. (he chose poorly?)And I think that Snape will never be “Good” per se, but I agree that he will probably turn out on the side of the Order of the Phoenix. We’ll know soon though. That’s the fun, and why I went on record with my thoughts.

    Harman
I agree with you. I’ve seen all the movies, and they’re fun, but I kind of keep them separate in my head from the books. J.K.Rowling puts so much important detail and effort into these books, that you just can’t boil it down into 2-3 hours. While the movies are good in their own right they can’t possibly have all of the nuance.

  40. vini on April 5th, 2007 8:22 am

james died.Lily died.Sirius died,Dumbledore died and if harry dies it will be senseless dont u think so he suffered all his life for nothing??and i think RAB must be a death eater or an EX-D.E or a great dark wizard or witch he says TO the dark lord only death eaters call him like this.and there is no time to present such a great wizaed.and michelle I donnt think that is regulus Sirius brother(all the order members says that he was very weak wizard)

  41. vini on April 5th, 2007 8:35 am

the prophecu touches harry and Neville to but I dont think it is about Neville and that he’ll kill voldemort.I think that the prophecy is about harry(dumbledore said to harry:only the owner of the prophecy can take it and harry took it not Neville) I think its all about harry

  42. steve on April 5th, 2007 9:09 am

    Perker and Vini
I agree, I think Harry will survive and we will get at least a glimpse of who Harry becomes in the end after Voldemort falls. I also like the idea that R.A.B. is a former or disgruntled death eater, but there’s a whole lot of other people that have a bone to pick with Voldemort as well. I also think that there will be some new twists in how the prophecy get “re-interpreted” to have different meanings. That’s where some of the fun with prophecies lies, in how they get mis-interpreted.

RAB is Sirius’ brother. Regulus A. Black, who died a long time ago.

Interesting about Harry being a Horcrux. Maybe. Could explain why he needed Harry’s blood to resurrect and why Harry’s scar feels him and why he didn’t kill him.

I doubt Percy will be the DADA teacher.

I think Hagrid will die, and Harry will live.

I’ve also thought Snape loved Lilly from afar, but am pretty convinced he’s a bad guy. He’s almost one of the most interesting characters in the book.

I doubt Dumbledore is still alive.

Thanks for commenting. I really hope that Malfoy doesn’t end up a good guy. The fictional world needs its villains after all. They’re often more important than the heros, at least to the plot lines! I’m also hoping that R.A.B. won’t be someone pulled out of the air, but someone we already know. Which is really what I suspect will happen. It could be something similar to Moodty in Goblet of Fire, where someone isn’t who they claim to be. That would be fun. Maybe someone like Slughorn, who would be improbable, but certainly have motivation.

  55. andrew on May 11th, 2007 6:42 pm

wow steve, that was a really nice predicition! im scared to read the 7th now because it might turn out exactly as u had sed and there will be no fun or surprise in it for me xP

as far as R.A.B. goes, i think Regulus Black is the most probable candidate. for example, as others have stated above, only death eaters call Voldemort the “dark lord.” Regulus, being a death eater at the time he wrote the letter, would probably address voldemort as such. also, as others above have said, they found in Grimmauld Place a locket that is unable to be opened. this most probably is the horcrux that harry and dumbledore had been searching for, for it is in the house of regulus black. this ties in to ur opinion that JK Rowling never lets a detail go by without making it an important factor to the main plot of the story. Furthermore, i dont know if someone mentioned this or not but in the letter R.A.B. writes, “i will be long dead before u read this.” regulus black had been killed long before harry found the letter, hadn’t he?

as for dumbledore being dead, i agree with you that he is alive. j.k. rowling may have said what she said just for the opportunity of being able to surprise us once more! i also wholeheartedly agree with ur opinion that Neville will die, and that Snape is a faithful member of the Order.

Thanks for the prediction! i hope that the seventh will sum up to be much, much more than we expected! :)

  56. megan on May 14th, 2007 3:16 pm

what is the connection w/ harry’s eyes?

i bet the car will come back because it is just been sitting in theforest since book 2?

did you realize that a bunch of hp names come from the sky?
like Luna is our moons name,
there is are stars names sirius and bellatrix,

the is a story on how the roman republic was started and the amin characters names are remulus and remus- like lupin- and they are raise by a female wolf because some people were plotting to kill them!

  57. Adam on May 17th, 2007 2:37 pm

Well all this soundsd brilliant! The theories make me believe that all this will happen because it all makes sense.

  64. maxine on May 24th, 2007 5:31 pm

wow i love this ending! its kinda what i expected but much more…i agree that regalus black is RAB…what does steve think???

  65. steve on May 25th, 2007 11:15 am

    Hey Gang
Sorry I’ve been a little quiet, the whole work thing cramping my style again! As always, thanks everyone for commenting. And in particular thanks Ed for answering Nanie.

As far as who RAB is, I mentioned back in December, I think JK is playing this one close to the vest. I suspect it will be someone we know pretty well. So I’m not thinking Regulus, whom we only know from a couple mentions. But I do expect a surprise!
    Steve(MBE)

  66. steve on May 25th, 2007 11:26 am

Ah, just had a thought on RAB. I don’t expect that this is who it will be, but wouldn’t it be fun if it turned out to be Kreature! Think about it, he could be acting out of a revenge for the Black family, and putting RAB as a reference to Regulus. Not only that, but house elves are highly magical, and Voldemort may not have thought to protect the Horcrux from such a creature (or should I say Kreature). Probably not, but it would be a fun twist.
    Steve (MBE)

  67. Neziq on May 25th, 2007 1:35 pm

    Steve-

I like your idea about Kreature but it doesnt seem posible for him to attack another pure blood family but it might happen. As to your other predictions Dumbuldor is most sertainly dead. Harry being a Hoarcrux maybe. I hope that my point is brought to light.

  68. steve on May 27th, 2007 9:43 am

Thanks for commenting. I know, I’ve taken a beating for the Dumbledore prediction, especially in the wake of JK saying he’s dead. I’ve covered this in the comments above. And in the original post I’ve also noted this.

As far a Kreature, that’s part of the fun. (Disclaimer it is not an official prediction) So far I don’t think we know that RAB has done anything but steal a Hoarcrux. And I think one thing we’ve certainly learned from Dobby, is that given sufficient motivation, or self discipline, a house elf most certainly can attack a pure blood family!
    Steve (MBE)

  69. maxine on May 27th, 2007 10:39 am

i have a thought about why Snape killed Dumbledore, and it may have been mentioned before but anyway….

at the end of the sixth book all the death eaters had invaded hogwarts and the “good guys” were strongly outnumbered. dumbledore may have known that eventually this might happen, and if it did there was really no way to stop the death eaters from pretty much wiping out all of the students and staff. however, the main goal of these death eaters was probably to defeat dumbledore. So, dumbledore may have told Snape beforehand that if worst came to worst he must kill him, or everyone in hogwarts would die and the feet of the death eaters. Remember, after Snape killed dumbledore all of the death eaters evacuated hogwarts and the students were more or less safe. Dumbledore’s death could have been an act of protection to everyone else in hogwarts.

    7 it could be harry
    thanks kool dude

  74. steve on June 13th, 2007 7:32 am

    Hey Kool
Interesting list. And yes I would suspect you are right about several. Although I would think some, like the snake are more speculative.
    Steve (MBE)

  75. maxine on June 13th, 2007 1:44 pm

what is the slytherin hair thing horcrux? i’ve never heard of it but the rest of them sound right. i think someone said before that nagini wasn’t a horcrux

  80. Unknown on June 14th, 2007 4:09 pm

yeah but u didn’t say that up there. but it couldn’t be non humans are unable to cast magic…

  81. steve on June 15th, 2007 8:01 am

    Unknown
Uuuhhhh….. you did catch the point about Kreature being RAB was a joke right?

But if you think that “non-humans” can’t do magic then you are clearly sleeping through Hagrid’s class. You know, the one on MAGICAL CREATURES. Or professor Firenze’s class, you know the non-human, centaur teacher, who is clearly very magical? I suspect that professor sprout is also not entirely human. And house elves in particular, while they have strange codes and inhibitions, are clearly very magical. There are so many examples of non-humans doing something magic in these books I hardly know where to begin.

  82. Jo on June 17th, 2007 9:20 pm

    Steve,
I love your theores obout Harry Potter 7 and I hope that most of them are correct. I don’t think R.A.B. are initials. That would be too easy. I don’t think R.A.B. will be a new characture but I dout he will be expected. It is posible that R.A.B. did not take the Hourcruxs yet and that He/She will use a time turner. (The subject of time turners will probobly come up in book 7.)

I’m guessing that snape is a bad guy and that Draco Malfoy will become a good guy and kill him. It would be cool if Doumbledour wosn’t dead and I hope he isn’t, but I realy wan’t snape to be evil.

Neveil may die but he will take Bellatrix Lestridge with him. I don’t know how he will kill her but He will. I just hope he dosn’t use the Crusasius cures to do It.

As for Harry being a Hourcruxs, I think it is a bit too abvious and I think J.K.R. will make it look like he is a Hourcruxs but that he won’t realy be one.

    Jo

I totally think that this guy is right. AND A GENIUS…the only way to find out is to read it.

  87. steve on June 20th, 2007 11:08 am

    Thanks Nate

To clarify for everyone, here are the rules about spoilers on this post:

1 I’ll obscure any that appear before the book is available as I did to Abhinav. Please lets give people a chance.

2 Once I’ve read the book, I will do a follow up to the original post and rate the performance of my predictions.

    3 Then we can discuss.

Predictions and speculation however, as always are welcome.
